The Guardian.

The Guardian Research

Introduction - So this is my 'Guardian' pitch, basically just my ideas put all together and telling you what I want my TV show to be like. On this assignment I am going to have different information about outline of idea, plot, characters, locations, production requirements, budget, constraints my TV show and basically a summary of what it is going to be like.

Target Audience - So I have been doing some research about my TV programme, and I have been thinking about different things that I want to have in it and especially my Target Audience because that is the bit that I really want to get a wide range of people on. I have been reading some books about Target Audiences and how it could help me to choose who I wanted my TV show relate too. I also used the internet too as really that was something easier to use because it was quicker for me.

So looking at some information about Target Audience, I had a good think about it and decided that my Target Audience was going to be aimed at defiantly people who like to watch movies/TV shoes with some sort of superhero in. The age that I am really looking at is going to be about 16-45, I thought was a good age as loads of people that are over the age of 16 will watch my TV show as it is going to be drama/gory so I think that they will enjoy it the most and obviously then I will get more viewers. Also for my target audience I want it to be aimed at anyone for example both male and female and any type of sexualities because anyone is available to watch it.

Budget - So again for my budget I had a look in some books to see if they could help me. The budget is basically what everything is going to cost all together like the equipment you need ect. I read about why people do it for professional reasons also and started to think about mine.

I then went onto the internet to put my budget together. I went on different websites to find out how much it would actually cost to hire professional recording cameras. As you already know Im im college if this was a real thing then i could just use the cameras for free but in a professional way it wouldn't be free. Budgets are always used a professional way and always used in:

  • TV shows.
  • Films.
  • Documentaries.
  • Interviews
These a really important as you can tell! Otherwise it wouldn't happen.

My TV show pitch

So for my TV show plan it is pretty easy! I want to be able to show people that I'm capable of creating a really good TV show that my audience is going to watch and enjoy. I want to also show that this is a thing i want to be able to actually carry on with foe the rest of my life. But by getting support and a wide audience that will help me a lot more and I'll them be more likely to succeed.

So first of all is what i think id actually want the theme to actually be for everytime there is a brake, the TV show starts and also when it ends. As the colour scheme is purple and blue I want to have a purple dark background for the start of the show with the name "The Guardian" in a dark blue font with a light blue shining affect around that while it is fading in. I think that it would make the beginning of the show start of good. The colours purple and blue suggest that the TV show 'The Guardian' is actually going to be involved with many different secrets and many other stories that shall be told.

Next I actually thought of the fonts that I could be using for my TV show, I actually want the text to be WordArt that you can use on the computer. I want the text to be big a noticeable to so that people see the names of the people who are actually helping me to give credit to them. The text is going to be the same colours that i said before, dark blue with a light blue shining affect around that. I am keeping the same font and the colour because that is the colour scheme of my TV show and I want to stick to that.

I have been thinking about music I am thinking about using and also different sound affects that will be used. So because my TV show is a drama and a gore type of show I want to have at the beginning is something that is slow and actually makes people think about what is going to be the first thing that shows up on the screen. I want the music to make the TV show look more real and interesting for my audience to watch. As far as i know for my sound affects I actually want for an example creepy sounds that make the TV more enajetic and more realistic! I think altogether having music and sound affects makes the TV show a lot better as it makes it a lot more interesting.

When thinking more into my TV show I had a thought about different locations that i could record in. Well i want my TV show to be based in a City and the one that i thought of is London. I think that this location would be great to record at because its London, the place is absolutley amazing! It has amazing views that I could get onto camera and also because its going to be a big TV show.

Production Process - With everything that I have been thinking about doing for my own TV show has worked very well! As you can see above, the things that i was actually planning on my TV show 'The Guardian' are in detail above. I hope that its clear what I have actually planned and that my TV show actually gets many viewers and achieves loads in the future.

Employment Opportunities and Jobs

Employment opportunities and job roles in the media sector

Film - Films are what the producers make it is a very popular thing and lots of people do watch movies. There are different genres of movies as well so that they aren't all the same and they are: Horror, Drama, Thriller, Sci-fiction, Historical, Spy Fiction, Adventure, Comedy, Crime, Fantasy and many more. Movies are shown in the cinema and also are shown at homes but some of them you have to pay for. Lots of people are involved in film, in 2012, there were 70,000 people working in the UK film industry and I'm sure that there is a lot more around the world now. The film industry earn around about 83.billion which is a really big amount.

In film there is lots of things that you can get yourself involved in for example you can be a director, producer or a writer. These jobs can be really hard to get as you would need really good qualifications to be involved, the jobs that you could get yourself involved is a director where you would see what scenes go first and in what order so that it all works, directors normally start to work about 4-5 month before the movie actually begins to get shot  its the main job for creating a movie. A movie director normally earns around £80,830 pear year which is a really big amount of money. Movie directors normally work for 10 hours a day which is a lot of time as you would have so much to do with it being one of the main jobs in creating a movie. I would say that being a director would be one of the most interesting thing to do while creating a movie. Another job that you can get in film is you can be the writer who just writes the script and what sort of action they do. For a script writer in 2013 they earned around £11,000 which is a lot of money for writing scripts. The hours that they work are different depending what you are doing for example if you are a home base freelance write you would choose your working hours, if you were apart of the studio-based writing team you would then be more likely to work standard office hours. In any of them cases you would often have strict deadlines to meet.

To be apart of the film industry it would be good to have a degree in business or film studies as it would be useful for it. For this job you would have to be very creative as you might have the job at making the script or even helping the actors/actresses by telling them what to do and how to say it etc. For the film industry you would need to know how to use a camera for if you are recording the movie and so that you know what exactly you are doing. You can do work experience before you actually get involved to get more of an idea of what you do and to prepare you for the real thing. I found out about film and video editing that it ins't a starting role in the industry and that it is also common for students or graduates to gain some experience in a role such as a runner. But may also build up the experiences in other areas of media production before moving into editing.

Radio -

Radio is a live broadcast what people can listen to, it is world wide and its really popular. The radio has lots of different things on it for example they talk about different things that may of happened on that day, they do interviews and they also show music which they sometimes as people to text them with the song that they want to listen to. Radio was first invented in 1895 by a young lad called Gugliemo Marconi and radio earns around 130 billion globally. Over 500,000 work for the radio industry which is a really big amount.

Radio is just basally a broadcast that is shown for everyone to listen to in the world, you can listen to it on the internet or you can listen to it on the television. There are lots of jobs what you could get involved in for example you can be the presenter which is just the main person that normally talks the most. Radio presenters usually work for 3 hours but it can be anywhere on a 24 hour schedule depending on the popularity, the type of the broadcast and the genre of the show. If you are a presenter of a large mainstream radio company for example 'BBC Radio 1' you get £100,000 and £600,000 a year. But if you are a less experienced radio presenter on a less well known station you can earn £14,000 a year. You can be a Sales Director for the radio for example the hallamfm is one of the most successful commercial stations and the generating growth of 28% for the last 2 years. If your a Sales Director you'll be results driven with strong leadership and coaching skills. Normally they get paid up to £35,270 around about that which is a lot of money, there is also a lot of jobs that are going like this so get yourself involved. They normally work between the hours of 9am-5.30pm Monday to Friday.

To be involved in the radio industry again you could do an apprenticeship so that you learn more about the industry and how everything works in it, you can join a degree course that would help you understand more. You would have to have a funny sense of humor as the radio can be quiet funny at times and you don't really want to make it sound boring. If you take part in either an apprenticeship or a degree course then this would make you much more noticeable and you will have more of a change to get involved in the radio industry. For the radio I found out that it would be recommended that you had a HND or foundation degree that is also sometimes possible, but you will need considerable relevant experiences in programme making that is often gained through voluntary work.

Advertising & Marketing - There is a difference between Advertising and Marketing and that is that Advertising is showing the world the thing that you want to advertise for example people advertise movies so that people go and watch them and also clothes are advertised and games to make people want them. Marketing is trying to let people know that you are trying to sell a certain item. Lots of people are involved in advertising and marketing as there is websites for clothes shops, there is YouTube where trailers are on there and many more. There is a lot of people involved in advertising and marketing because people make trailers and adverts for clothes, makeup and body sprays etc so there will be a lot of people who are employed. Advertising earns around about 143 billion, Advertising people spend billions of their money per year to market their products and services.

Advertising and Marketing is really popular as lots of people are involved in it especially celebrities as there is lots of adverts on the television that involves them for example Peter Andre advertises Iceland, David Beckham had advertised Adidas, Motorola, Pepsi and Coty and many more celebrities advertise other things. There is a huge range of jobs that you can have for advertising and marketing. Advertising employers earn less that £30k-£100k or more than £100k and Marketing employers earn from £18,00 to £25,500 if you are just starting but the overall average salary is £21,461 with charities and financial services providing the higher wages.

To get involved in the advertising and marketing industry you would have to know good ways to sell things, you could do it by yourself by selling your own things and then advertising them by yourself for example you could ask people on Facebook if they want to buy it and put photos of them on or you could even have an education about it to find out more about advertising and marketing so you have more of understatement of it. If you wanted to go to the University of Bedfordshire Business School it has a very special distinctive way to bring together real business practice, academic research and innovative approaches to learning. There is also a rigorous approach to practice at the heart of anyone's learning experience at the university. So you will experience how academic learning informs and improves a managers business performance and also how practical experience informs and develops your understanding of theory. If you want to know more about the university then this is the link to it.  http://www.beds.ac.uk/howtoapply/courses/undergraduate/advertising-and-marketing-communications2#sthash.MD4ToSJ2.dpuf

Gaming - Gaming is probably one of the most popular things as lots of people play games on many different consoles. The gaming industry get £3.8 billion generated by the home video game industry. There is lots of people that are involved in gaming altogether there is 4700 people involved in the Blizzard Entertainment and there is also many people who will be involved in it all over the world.

In gaming there is a lot of jobs that are available to anyone in the world, there is so many to choose from. Gaming is a popular thing as lots of people like to play them and games are sold that people buy. The industry is huge are well know, for example in gaming you can be a Technical Artist are people who work between the Artists and Programmers working on a game but the main thing that they have to do is include setting up and maintaining the art production workflow and also making decisions about which art packages and tools that a studio should use. Technical Artists normally work full time which is normally 37-48 hours Monday-Friday. Technical Artist earn around about £34,000-£100,000 through the year, which is a really good amount of money and is a good job that you could get. There is also another job that you could do which is an Assistant Producer and what these do is they work with the games production staff to ensure that the timely delivery of the highest quality product possible. The main thing that they focus on is specific ares of the development process which could involve handling the communications between the publisher or the developer or co-ordinating work on some of the project's key processes for managing the outsourcing of art assests. Assistant Producers normally earn around £24,000-£45,00 a year which is quiet a lot of money so it would be a really good job that you could get. Assistant Producers normally full time again which is 37-48 hours Monday-Friday.

To be involved in the gaming industry you would have to know how to use computers properly and how everything works as it is done in a clever way for example for a game you have the graphics  that you have to work on, you get the credits that you would have to work on as well as the script for it. Before you actually try to get into the game industry I would suggest you try to get an apprenticeship or a degree course so that you have more of an experience of the job and so that you know what you are doing exactly. Doing this would then help you get more notice and then hopefully more people would then maybe want you to work for them so it gives you a chance to get involved in the gaming industry. The requirement to get into the game industry would be to have an applied career-enhancement degree which is to increase the depth of knowledge and also the practical skills of computer system technologists. You also assist them in widening your career opportunities of advancing your career path. When you have done so the graduates are awarded a credential that is highly valued by the industry.

Regualation in the Creative Media sectors.

Regulation in the Creative Media sectors.

Why does the Creative Media Sector need to be regulated?

Well really there is many different reasons why the media sectors need to be regulated and for an example of that is actually age ratings for movies, these actually help determine the suitable audience for a film. Well actually some movies are not good for some children to watch and some actually cause offence! This actually links to the website (BBFC) because their role is to protect children and vulnerable adults from potentially harmful or unsuitable content. Also to empower customers  especially parents and those that have the responsibility of their children! To make informed viewing decisions.

In an easier way to actually describe this is something that it is actually called and used and is the watershed, this is basically where any show/movie anything with rude language in or violence is showed after 9pm when children are normally in bed. This basically just prevents underaged people watching something that they shouldn't be watching.

British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) - This is basically something that was made in 1912, and is an organisation that gives films their rating for example:
  • PG
  • U
  • 12
  • 18
This organisation have never accepted funds of the government so that it stays independent! The organisation is funded by the film industry and they are also required to classify video, DVD's and even games. The Video Recordings Act was passed in 1984 by Parliament.

Press Complaints Commission (PCC) - Well the PCC is an independent body that administers the system of self-regulation for the press. The independent body does so primarily by dealing with all the complaints. The actual purpose of the PCC is to actually serve the public by holding editors to account. The PCC can also assist individuals by representing their interests to editors in advance of an article about them being published.

The PCC aim to actually promote high standards by developing clear guidance and practical principles through their rulings and they offer training and advice to the editors and also the journalists.

Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) - This is basically the UK's independent regulator of advertising across all the media! Their job is to apply the Advertising Codes, that are actually written by the Committies of Advertising Practise. Their work includes:
  • Acting on complaints and proactively checking the media to take action against misleading, harmful or offensive advertisements.
  • Investigating and adjudicate on potential breaches of the Advertising Codes and monitor compliance with the rules.
Their mission is to actually ensure that advertising in all media is actually legal, decent, honest and also truthful, to the benefit of the customers, business and the society.

Office for Communication (Ofcom) - So basically the Office or Communication is a communications regulator, they actually regulate the:
  • TV.
  • Radio Sectors.
  • Fixed Line Telecoms.
  • Mobiles.
  • Postal Services.
  • The airways over which wireless devices operate.
The Office for Communication is actually funded by the fees from industry, it is also operated under the Communications Act 2003. The act says that "Ofcom's" general duties should be to further the interests of citizens and of consumers. Meeting these two duties is at the heart of everything we do.

Issues associated with regulations - There are actually also issues with regulating and that is because it is actually starting to become to soft and it is also banning the things that wouldn't be causing any offence!. Another issue is actually to do with age rating for movies for example, if a certain movie is rated a 18 different views think different like a parent might be ok with their 16 year old watching an 18 rating movie. If they are ok with them actually sitting down to watch it then it that should be ok because really it's the customers choice really. If then there becomes too many regulations then it will become censorship.

Privacy Law

Laws are written approved and enforced by a particular government if you brake a law you could face police investigations court appearance and fine.

Ethic Rules of conduct responsibly (Not the Law) if you break an ethical code you could be forced to act with ethical disapproval from your peers or professional body

Privacy Law  (Human Rights) - This is a regulation that protects a persons right to be left alone.

Why is it important for producers to understand the legal considerations when working in the creative sectors?

Well it's important because the law is a very serious thing, if we didn't have them then people would do whatever they wanted and easily get away with it. In the creative sectors there are a lot of different legal things for an example copyright, if you use anyone's song for example someone famous and used it for something that you had made then yes that would e copyrighted and then you wouldn't be able to show anyone whatever you had done/made. Plus there is also many other things that could be used in the wrong way but I will get into that soon.

Libel Law - This is basically a method of defamation expressed by print, writing, pictures, signs, effigies or even any communication embodied in physical form that is injurious to a person's reputation, exposes a person to public hatred, contempt or ridicule, or injures a person in his/her business or profession.

My example of this is going to be when Robin Williams sued his celebrity look alike for pretending to be the real Robin Williams. When he done this it caused a lot of damage to Robin Williams reputation.

Privacy Law - Privacy Law actually refers to the laws that deal with the regulation of personal information about individuals which can be collected by the government and other public as well as private Organizations and its storage and use. Sachsgate: Fawlty Towes actor still disgusted about the situation with Russell Brand and Johnathan Ross insulting him and his daughter

Obscene Publication Act 1959 (and later amendments) - This is an Act of Parliament of the United Kingdom Parliament that significantly reformed the law related to obscenity in England and Wales. Their acts are devided into 5 different sections, the 5th section is covering the extent of the act and its commencement date.
  • Section 1 - This covers the test to determine if something is obscene, an article is taken to be obscene if the entierere article "is,if" taken as a whole, such as to tend to depraved and corrupt people who are most likely, having regard to all relevant circumstances, to read, see or hear the matter contained or embodied in it. If you want to read more then just go to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obscene_Publications_Act_1959.
  • Section 2 - This covers the actual prohibition of publishing 'obscene material'. It creates a new "publishing an obscene article" that replaces the common law misdemeanour of "obscene libel" that was previously the crime. Anyone can be found guilty of this regardless of if it was done for profit or not. Where the article is a film, the consent of the Director of Public Prosecutions is required before a prosecution can commence. Again if you want to read more head over to the link above.
  • Powers of search and seizure are actually covered by section 3, which also repealed the Obscene Publications Act 1857. This section allows a Justice of the Peace, if satisfied that there are reasonable grounds to actually believe obscene Publications are kept on certain premises for profit, to issue a warrant for that location. The warrant allows a police officer to enter the  premises, to search them and also remove any suspect publications; if such publications are found, the officer can also take a record relating to the business trade. The articles must then be brought before a magistrate and either forfeited by the owners or returned. The owner, author or publisher of the articles, or the person from whom they were seized, may appear before the magistrate to argue why they should not be forfeited.
  • Section 4 creates the defence of public good, which applies both to prosecutions for publication of obscene materials and to the forfeiture proceedings that is described in section 3. This actually allows for a valid defence if the defendant can show that the publication of the materials was justifiable as for the "Public Good", which is defined as " in the interests of science, literature, art or learning, or of other objects or general concern. Experts and their testimony are admissible for determining the value of such publications. This section was treated very strictly by the trail judges, but the attitude was reversed after the 1976 Trial of the book "Inside Linda Lovelace" where the jury found the publisher not guilty despite the judge saying that "if it isnt obscene, the members of the jury, you may think that nothing is obscene". Then three years later the " Williams Committee " suggested that restrictions on written pornography be lifted and also these restrictions have been largely abandoned. .

Copyright and Intellectual Property Law - Copyright is a type of intellectual; law that protects your work. The names of your product or brands, things you write, make or produce. Your inventions, the design or look of your products, by knowing your rights and having the right type of protection you can stop people stealing or copying Intellectual property is something that is unique to you if physically created. i.e. and idea is not your intellectual property but the words you write.

Official Secrets Act 1989 - This is an act of the parliament of the United Kingdom that repeals and also replaces section 2 of the Official Secrets Act 1911, by removing the public interest defence that are created by that section. There are 16 different sections that they do and this is what they are:

  • Section 1 - Security and Intelligence.
  • Section 2 - Defence.
  • Section 3 - International Relations.
  • Section 4 - Crime and Special Investigation powers.
  • Section 5 - Information resulting from unauthorized disclosures or entrusted in confidence.
  • Section 6 - Information entrusted in confidence to other States or to international organisations.
  • Section 7 - Authorised disclosures.
  • Section 8 - Safeguarding of information.
  • Restriction on prosecutions.
  • Penalties.
  • Arrest, Search and Trial.
  • Definition of Crown seruant and government contractor.
  • Other interpretation provisions.
  • Procedure for making orders under the act.
  • Acts done abroad and extent.
  • Citation, commencement, repeals and revocation.

Health and Safety Act - This is basically just an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that as of 2011 defines the fundamental structure and authority for the encouragement, regulation and enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare within the United Kingdom. There is 4 different acts and them are:
  • Securing the health, safety and welfare of people at work.
  • Protecting people, other than people just at work, against risks to health or safety that may happen within the activites that happen at work.
  • Controlling the keeping and use of explosive or highly flammable or otherwise dangerous substances.
  • Controlling the emission into the atmosphere of noxious or offensive substances.
Employees even have their own responsibilites which are to co-operate with their other employees, take care of their own health and safety and that of other people (employees may be liable) and also to not interfere with anything provided in the interest of health and safety.
